Trying to start this post with a little background, and for the life of me I can’t even remember how many years the TWML has been in existance. We’re in season number 17, which will be 4 years in October I believe. Crazy.
Anyways for those that don’t know, prepared to be geeked out big time. For the past almost 4 years, I’ve had a franchise in a simulation baseball league named the TWML. What you say is the TWML? It’s the Ted Williams Memorial League, run by the one and only Adam Darowski. What you say is simulation baseball? Well, for what I know it’s baseball based on the numbers. Players are given talents and ratings for those talents, then the games are simulated based on those given talents. (I could go further, but you don’t really want me to)
After making the playoffs for the first and only time 4 seasons ago, my franchise (The Toughtown Sting) has been mired in a rebuild that’s going slowly but surely. I’d always made it a priority to draft players with either Good in getting hits (for position players) or Good in avoiding hits (for pitchers). Until recently when I drafted a closer named Alex Coleman. In the rookie draft he was picked sixth, with talents of Average in avoiding hits, but Good talents everywhere else. Discussing the merits of being able to avoid extra base hits, walks while be good at getting strikeouts with Adam made me realize that maybe just the Good in avoiding hits wasn’t all it’s cracked up to be.
Well, it’s still early but in his first season Coleman hasn’t dissapointed. He’s only allowed 2 runs in 14.2 innings and has just been a dominant closer for us. He also bumped up the talent in avoiding walks to Brilliant. His avoiding runs rating maybe on the low side for a pitcher, but he’s proving to me that that rating almost doesn’t matter. (I said almost)
So as of now, he’s my favorite player in the TWML, and I can’t see him dissapointing in the future. It’s always fun hanging your hat on fictional baseball players that live and die by numbers.
